The beach is rocky though there is a small patch sand. A popular spot with surfers.
If you would prefer to trek there are a number of lovely walks. The Cathedral Cliffs are very impressive. However, the region reaches from the Ruapehu district around the Tongariro National Park all the way down to Levin and Eketahuna on the edge of the Wellington region.
